What is a body oil

Basically, body oils are an oil that is used to lock in moisture. There are so many different types of body oils on the market from strictly hydrating to shimmery. Many people use oils instead of lotion right after a shower to really lock in the moisture. This can be really beneficial for those who struggle with dry skin. Oils can also be a good addition to your winter body care routine just because it will help your skin retain the hydration it needs in the mists of the dry weather.

How to use a body oil

Body oils are maximized right out of the shower. Since the skin is already wet, these oils will help lock in water and hydration. Which keeps your skin nicely moisturized. A little goes a long way! In my experience, you need to slowly work in small amounts at a time rather than slapping a handful on and being done with it. I think that body oils take awhile to actually soak in completely.

You can still use your normal lotions and creams, but if you REALLY REALLY want your skin moisturized use an oil as your final step. You would just apply your lotion like normal and then follow up with a body oil to keep all that hydration locked into your skin.

Body oils to use

Hydration

The most common oil you have heard about is probably Coconut oil. This is a good overall oil, but beware of potential acne. Coconut oil can lead to clogged pores both on the body and face. For my acne prone people, I would suggest not using this oil, or at least testing it out a small section of skin. If you do not suffer from body acne, but have issues maintaining moisture, this is a great ingredient to help your skin stay hydrated.

I have sensitive and acne prone skin and this Shea Moisture body oil has never broken me out. I use it during the winter months to keep my skin from drying out (only on my body). Another really good alternative is by Neutrogena. This body oil is loved by both skincare lovers and dermatologists! It is a great way to provide extra hydration at a drug store price. Neurtogena.com provides different ways to utilize a body oil for the best skin ever!

Shimmer

There are some body oils that include shimmer. These can be fun to achieve that summer sparkle, but just make sure you use sunscreen. I can almost guarantee that getting toasted is not the effect you are looking for. When I’m feeling extra, I personally lean towards a minimal sparkle. Just enough to be more glowly, but not like BAM blinding LOL! My favorite one is by Robi Skincare, but they discontinued their collection. (I’m actually really sad about it!)

My good friend RAVES about the Anastasia Beverly Hills one. The shimmers are beautiful in the sun, and it smells like a tropical vacation. I have been told that it’s not really sticky, and absorbs rather quick. Which is something super I’m important to me! I do have to warn you that this oil can get everywhere! The product will rub off when you touch something, so be careful with light colored clothing and furniture.

*Make sure your body oil has SPF included in it, or at least use adequate amounts of sunscreen. Especially if you are using it in the day time. This is huge for any kind of body oil because it will reduce the risk of sun damage and help prevent skin cancer. Skin cancer and sun damage is no joke, and something I’m pretty sure you don’t want to deal with.

Rinse Off

There are also rinse off body oils. Based on the name, you will rinse off these oils while still in the shower. They work as a body wash or shower gel. It will allow more moisture to stay locked within your skin. During the winter, when I have dry skin, rinse off oils are great to keep my skin moisturized.

The Kopari shower oil, is a really great product to lock in extra hydration. I only use this in the winter months to help my skin stay moisturized. The scent is pretty strong, but it smells SO GOOD! It’s like an island paradise! I am very sensitive to scents, but this one isn’t bad to deal with, I actually really like it. You use it after your normal body wash, just to keep in the water from the shower.
