It’s hard to decide what kind of vacation is the best for you.  There are so many different types of holidays, it can be very difficult to pick just one! But, how do you decide if a cruise or land vacation is better? In short, it all depends on how you want to spend your vacation. Things like your budget, and what you want out of this experience.

Which is better, a cruise or land vacation??

When I travel with my parents, or I go somewhere new, I always choose to go on a cruise. When I have already visited a destination, then I will choose a land vacation to get really immersed in the culture.  Throughout my travels, I have done a fair share of both land and sea vacations. Let’s compare each type of vacation, so you can have the best vacation ever!

On a basic level, cruises are good for those who do not want to deal with food, accommodations, and even entertainment.  Cruises are perfect for people who want to see a lot of different places in a short amount of time.  I would say if you have never been to a certain country, go for a cruise because you can see a little of everything and if you like it, then you can go back for a land vacation and really explore.  On the other hand, a land vacation is really good for those who want to immerse themselves into the culture. You get to spend unlimited amounts of time doing whatever you want, exactly where you want!

Let’s break it down!

Types of Holidays Compared

Cruise Vacations Land Vacations
Cost More upfront –
but more cost efficient since you don’t have to pay for food, extra entertainment or additional transport and accommodations.

*Also because you paid so much upfront, you will probably be more aware of how much you can actually spend on other things.
Depending on how you like to travel, it will range. In my experience, I ended up paying much more for land vacations because of food and spontaneous excursions.
Food Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner buffets and a majority of sit down options are included.

Most cruise lines will have pizza, and ice cream (or Froyo) 24/7 included as well.

On most of the cruises I have been on, there is usually a dedicated day to a certain cuisine or “feature item(s)”
My absolute favorite was the chocolate extravaganza, where EVERYTHING was made out of chocolate. You can guarantee that I tried it all and went into a chocolate coma right after. LOL!

*If you decide on speciality dining, soda or alcoholic beverages, then these will be an additional cost.

Best part! NO dishes (LOL)
If you are lucky the hotel you are staying at will have breakfast included. Most of the time you have to fend for yourself for lunch and dinner, depending if you like going around to find the perfect place to eat, this can be a great option too!

Or you got an Airbnb stocked with a full kitchen. But you still have to buy ingredients and waste time making food instead of enjoying your vacation. If your anything like me, you really want good food, but I do not want to be the one to make it on vacation!

And you will still have dishes (not fun)
Accommodations You don’t need to book other hotels because you will have the same stateroom the entire cruise!

You will not waste ANY time packing and unpacking every time you move locations.

All you have to do is walk off the ship and you’re in a new destination, then come back when your done sightseeing or you just want to take a nap.
You will need to book a different hotel if you choose to visit other areas.

We all know how long it can take to pack and unpack your luggage. This can be a little more difficult

Don’t forget to include travel time as well! It can take away from your fun vacation time.  (and you definitely want to maximize your vacation time)
Entertainment A cruise ship has something for everyone. All day, everyday!

They have jewelry or shopping events for those in need in some retail therapy.

After-dinner shows, comedy shows, and pools for those who just want to relax after a nice long day.

Almost every cruise will have BINGO games and a casino for those who want to try their chances and hit the big bucks!

Almost every night there is a big party! I loved the Mardi Gras party, where everyone was able to join in and dance the night away.
On land vacations, most of the time, you have to find and pay for your own. This can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

I personally love aimlessly walking around new places and finding hidden gems.  I feel like it’s a great way to immerse yourself into the culture.

On the other hand, many people may feel like having to find something to do can be time-consuming or even a waste of time.

Not just strictly talking about excursions, but also things like of an after-dinner show.

In My Opinion

In my opinion, cruises are much more cost-effective. The upfront cost can scare people because it can be higher than a normal land vacation. Once you are on the cruise, you do not have to worry about booking for new hotels or accommodations, paying for food, or transport.  On a cruise, the main dining areas (sit-downs and buffets are included).  Many cruise lines have specialty dining which you can purchase for an additional cost (definitely something worth the try if you are a foodie). During the cruise, you are in the same cabin the entire time! So you don’t need to worry about booking additional hotels or other accommodations. My favorite thing about cruises is that while you are sailing to your next destination, you are not wasting time on transport because there are so many things to do aboard any ship! It’s honestly a 24/7 vacation!

I always envisioned my first trip to Europe. Which consisted of, making a call from a red telephone booth, having a picnic in front of the Effiel Tower, getting lost in the history of the Colosseum, and scenic drive along the Almafi Coast.  The only issue was that all of these things are in different areas not to mentions different countries! I wanted to hit as many of the major things during my first trip to Europe, and it would not have been possible without a cruise.  I would definitely look into a cruise, especially if it’s your first time in a certain place and want to visit a bit of everything.  You will always have an opportunity to travel to places that you absolutely fell in love with.

What are the Best types of holidays?

If you haven’t tried a cruise, definitely go for one. In my opinion, a cruise is the best way to see a lot in a short amount of time.   And you basically have unlimited amounts of food! Literally, my inner foodie LOVES this part (LOL). But start off with a short cruise. If you are in the LA/OC area, definitely check out Carnival’s 3 or 4 day cruise to Catalina and Ensenada. With cruises, something to think about is motion sickness.  It’s not fun especially on vacation (trust me I know).

If you love certain areas and want to learn more about the culture and way of life, then land vacations are perfect for you! Above all, these types of vacations are really for those who just want to stay in one general area for the entire time. Land vacations are the perfect types of holidays to get immersed into something new.

Want to enjoy Europe? There are so many cruise lines, that will help you travel around certain areas. Looking for a paradise island? Check out some inclusive resorts! They will take care of everything you need. Both of these options have various dining options, and shore excursions, along with different onboard or resort activities. Either way, any vacation you pick, will be perfect for you because almost everything is customizable!

OK SO…?

You might be asking, but Aly how can you not like a place on vacation…  Well yes, every place you pick, will have aspects that you will like.  But once you experience your destination, it might not be what you thought.  And so that’s why I say cruises are the best way to go especially if you are going somewhere totally new.

I envisioned myself sitting by the Trevi fountain eating some gelato during sunset. It was so disappointing when I learned that its literally impossible to even get to the fountain without having to push people out of the way. I couldn’t walk without being bumped into by other people.  Don’t get my wrong, Rome is beautiful, and I think that everyone should visit if the opportunity comes up, but I personally wouldn’t spend too much time there.

It’s definitely great to visit, but I’m so glad that my family decided to cruise there. We were able to still see what we wanted, just not how exactly how we envisioned it.  If we chose to stay in Rome for the entire trip, I would have left like I never left LA. I personally like destinations that are not as busy because I think it’s just more relaxing. And for that reason, I like to cruise to places that I’ve never been to see what I like, so I can stay there for a land vacation.
