Simple Morning Summer Skin Care Routine

Aly Monique Simple Morning Summer Skin Care Routine sitting out in the sun

With every season, you need to change your skincare routine! It’s so important to supply your skin with the nutrients and everything else it needs to survive the current environment.  In Southern California, we don’t have seasons…its practically summer all year round! Although, it does get pretty toasty and a bit dry. My simple morning summer skin care routine really depends on what I’m doing for the day.

I know that doesn’t really help you, but give me a chance to explain. For reference, I have super sensitive, acne prone skin. This means that I personally use lighter products during the summer months, just so I don’t look too oily throughout the day.

In the mornings when I work out, I don’t do much for my skin (at first). I go through a whole washing system right after.  So when I first wake up, I just rinse my face with cold water and apply a light moisturizer like this one by Cerave.   This works well for my skin and is enough for me before I workout.  But if you have oily skin, I would recommend that you wash your face and then apply moisturizer.  We all know that feeling of sweat and oil…and it’s SO uncomfortable! But, if you can deal with it, then it will work.

It’s all about personal preference.  Just make sure to do a thorough skincare routine after your workout! If you want to learn more about the importance and benefits of a good skincare routine make sure to check this article out!

Step 1: Cleansing

My simple morning summer skin care routine is pretty much the same every day.  I first start out with a cleanser.  I like to use a gel cleanser in the morning, just because I love the feeling.  But any kind of water based cleanser will work perfectly!  My go to face wash in the morning is the COSRX Good Morning Low pH Cleanser.  If you have not tried a gel cleanser yet, definitely try this one out!

If you are not a fan of gel cleansers a foam cleanser can be used as well.  Foam cleansers are super gentle and do not require a lot of lather time which can be perfect for those who need to get ready real quick.  My all time favorite foam cleansers are by Klairs and Neogen (in the green tea version).

I spend at least a full minute, yes that means 60 seconds actually cleansing my face.  This ensures that my skin is nice and clean, and ready for the rest of my skincare products and makeup.  Then, I rinse with cold water.  I DO NOT dry my face with a towel.

Especially with acne prone skin, I try to minimize things touching my face.  I only use a towel to dry the hair around my face.  This practice can be REALLY weird in the beginning.  But it’s something to try if you have issues with frequent breakouts.

Step 2 : Toner

After rinsing, I use a toner.  I do not wait for my face to dry completely! I apply toner right on my wet face.  In the summer months, I like to use more of a watery toner.  This means that the toner is lighter and absorbs easier into the skin.  I like how it doesn’t make my skin feel dense or heavy.  A watery toner will absorb right away, ensure proper skin hydration, and also get your skin ready for all the incoming products and ingredients.

The current toner I’m using is by Klairs.  I’ve been using this one for the past few months and so far it’s been great! The bottle is HUGE, so you won’t have to worry about stocking up so soon.  I have not noticed any breakouts or any bad reactions from this one.  It has no scent which is perfect for those with sensitive skin and it is vegan friendly and cruelty-free!  This specific one has cucumber water which helps with hydration.  It also has some light exfoliating ingredients which are safe for daily use and will help make your skin look and feel nice and smooth.

Some other lightweight toners perfect for simple morning summer skin care routine includes the Klairs Supple Preparation Toner and the Klairs Unscented Toner These toners are super light weight and does not feel sticky or heavy. There is no scent in the unscented toner making it perfect for those with sensitive skin. The original toner has a very little scent, but it’s super fresh and doesn’t bother me (and I’m really sensitive to fragrance).

Step 3: Essence

After toning, I use 1 layer of an essence.  An essence is another type of product that is used for extra hydration.  They are able to penetrate the skin and give you the hydration you always wanted.  I really love plump looking skin so that’s why I always use an essence after my toner.  I will usually wait like 30 seconds between my last toner application and the essence.  Yes, I want things to soak up, but I don’t want my skin dried completely either.  Your skin should soak up the essence right up!

In my current simple morning summer skin care routine, I am using the Mugwort Essence by I’m From.  This essence is great simply because it gives me the hydration I want.  I have never broken out from it.  The scent is so faint that most people can’t smell it, again perfect for those who are sensitive to scents or have sensitive skin in general.  Mugwort is a root that is known to reduce inflammation.  I personally did not notice any decrease in inflammation, but that does not mean that it isn’t a good one.  For me, it still did what I expected in an essence – extra hydration for super plump looking skin!

Although the Mugwort Essence is a great product, my all time favorite essence is by Missha.  This product is very similar to SKII, but without the hefty price tag.  I honestly love this essence and go back to it all the time.  But, both of these products are great for your summer morning skincare routine!

Step 4: Eye Cream

After my essence, I use an under eye cream.  I absolutely love the Etude House Moistfull Collagen Eye Cream.  My under eye area always feels well moisturized and the collagen helps reduce wrinkles.  It is so important to include an eye cream in your morning skincare routine! Your under eyes are where you will see the first signs of aging and eye cream can help keep that area as young looking as possible.  This is one of the only products that I wear year round.

I usually switch between 2 eye creams; the etude house one, and this one by Mizon.  The Mizon one feels like a cloud,  it’s so soft and moisturizing.  I cannot live without either of these eye creams! Just note that you should apply eye cream with your ring finger because it’s the most gentle finger to tap in the product! Make sure you TAP and not rub because you will create more wrinkles! (I’m sure you want to prevent as many lines as possible). To learn more about each skincare step read this article

Step 5: Emulsion

When I’m all finished applying my eye cream, I go for an emulsion.  An emulsion is a light moisturizer, with a lotion-like consistency.  I only use an emulsion in the morning because I do not like looking oily.  Especially in the summer, when it gets pretty hot and sweaty. My skin just need a little something for moisture, but still something that is light enough that my skin will soak it in quickly and not melt in the sun.

I am currently using the Cosrx oil free ultra moisturizing lotion with birch sap, in my simple morning summer skin care routine.  This product is perfect for the summer and this is what I use EVERY summer.  I love how light and moisturizing it is.  It is also really good at calming your skin.  When I got sunburned, this product was so refreshing and didn’t cause any more irritation.  I do want to mention that this product has a very light fresh scent.  I have super sensitive skin and this product never broke me out nor did I have any issues with the fragrance.  This emulsion is something I would definitely recommend to anybody for the summer!

Step 6 : Sunscreen

Lastly and most importantly, SUNSCREEN!  No matter what season it is, sunscreen is so important, especially in the summer.  Hello sunshine and beach days!!  Your summer skin really needs to be protected by sunscreen. You really need to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.  You need to find a sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 50 with a PA level of at least 2 plus (++).  Learn more HERE!

Let’s start with the difference between UVA and UVB.  UVA and UVB rays are present ALL THE TIME.  Even if there is no sun shining.  UVA will affect the deeper layers of the skin which is a cause of skin cancer.  UVB rays will affect the surface of the skin and are responsible for sunburns, age spots, and basically anything on the surface level.  SPF will fight against UVB rays, while PA plus(s) will help protect you from UVA rays.  I know this is totally confusing, but in short UVA -> PA, UVB -> SPF.  You really want to look for a sunscreen that explicitly says the SPF and PA ratings.  This will ensure you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays during your summer outings!

My all time favorite sunscreen is by Cosrx.  This one is super lightweight, did not leave a white cast and it smelled amazing (not synthetic or overwhelming).  It absorbs right away, so I didn’t feel greasy or oily.  This sunscreen has a nice fresh scent to it.  It also has aloe, which is very useful for reducing irritation and calming the skin, especially in summer.  This sunscreen has an SPF of 50 and a PA+++.  Just note, it can be very hard to get your hands on.  I was so sad last summer because I was not able to get my hands on it.  If you are able to get some, make sure to stock up!

I am currently using this one by A’pieuI like this product because I do not get the white cast and its SUPER affordable. But it only has an SPF of 45, with a PA of +++.  Because of quarantine, I rarely go out. That being said, I feel better that I am only using an SPF of 45.  If you plan to stay indoors more this summer, I would definitely try out the A’Pieu one. On the other hand, this is not a good sunscreen if you plan to go out a lot! There is just not enough SPF in there, to protect you for the sun.

My first recommendation is the Coxrx one, but if you are unable to get it, try the Neogen daylight protection sunscreen.  This one is a little more pricey, but I really liked it.  It’s super thin and lightweight.  I didn’t really get a white cast, if anything it was just VERY minimal discoloration (I’m not sure how to explain it, but just know it was not bad at all! I felt comfortable going out with adding makeup on top of it.) If you want, a little BB Cream or even a light concealer would cover it right up.  The Neogen one has an SPF of 50+ and a PA+++.

This is my simple morning summer skin care routine!  In short, I always start out with a cleanser, then toner (3 layers) and essence.  I follow that up with an eye cream and a quarter size amount of emulsion.  I always finish with some sunscreen.  This may seem like it takes a lot of time, but I am able to do this whole routine in about 5 minutes.  The longest part is the cleansing step.
