When I was in high school, I had crazy bad acne! It was to the point where I hated taking photos because I did not like the way I looked.  I was so insecure about my skin, that I would slather on makeup to try and cover all my pimples (which wasn’t a good look either). In my senior year of high school, I finally decided that enough is enough.  And I started my skincare journey! The best facial care routines all have a cleansing step, exfoliation step, preparation step (toner), a treatment step, and a moisturizing step. The benefits are visibly seen as beautiful, glowing, smooth, and well-hydrated skin. You can read all about my current summer skin care morning routine here.

The Importance of Cleansing

It is so important to wash your face…but you have to wash it well! This may seem like a no brainer, but some people do not have a good cleansing step. Leading to even more breakouts!  Cleansing is so important because it removes the makeup and dirt that can clog your pores.

Morning cleanses can vary for different skin types. Those who have drier skin can get away with just rinsing with water, while those with oily skin may need an actual cleanser to remove any extra oil.

Everyone should double cleanse at night, no matter your skin type! It is really important to double cleanse if you wear makeup. As you apply the double cleanse technique to your skin care routine, you will understand the importance of removing all your makeup, and the benefits it can have on your skin, like reducing breakouts!

If you don’t already know, a double cleanse involves an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser.  The oil-based cleanser usually comes as an oil or in a balm form.  Gently rub the oil into a dry, makeup coved face to break down all the makeup and sunscreen.  Once you rinse the oil off, you should follow up with a water-based cleanser.  This type of cleanser will remove dirt and sweat. Water-based cleansers come in foams and gels. After a good double cleanse, your face will be clean and ready to take in the next steps of your routine.  Double cleansing is a good practice for anyone in general! The importance of using a double cleanse is to ensure that everything is cleared from your skin, so you can benefit from clear skin- aka no more pimples!

Oil Cleansers

The oil cleanser is used to remove any makeup and you want to find something gentle that works for you.  Oil pumps, like the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, are great to really remove even the toughest makeup.  Balms are great at removing makeup too.  Everything just melts away! I absolutely love the Heimish All Clean Balm. Both forms will work the same way, it just depends on what you like.  Oils can be a little messier, but they can be easier and quicker just because the product is already broken down.  Balms are better for travel due to their solid-ish form. Just remember to rub the balm between your hands, to break it down, prior to rubbing it on your face.

Water Based Cleansers

For the water-based cleanser, you want to look for something that is gentle, ideally with a low pH.  My top 3 favorite water-based cleansers are Klairs Rich Moist Foaming Cleanser, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, and the Heimish All Clean White Clay Foam. I use the COSRX Good Morning cleanser every morning (hence the name) and alternate between the Klairs and Salicylic Acid one at night. No matter what kind of cleanser you use, really take the time to work it into your skin.  You want to get your skin all nice and clean so it can breathe. Trust me your skin will LOVE you for it!

The Benefits of Exfoliation

Exfoliating is an important step to obtain beautiful and glowing skin! 1-2 times a week is enough to get rid of the dead skin left on your face. You definitely do not want to overdo it or your skin could get raw! Most people think that exfoliation only occurs when you have to scrub your face so hard to the point that it bleeds… BUT no! The secret is you have to be really gentle! There are 2 types of exfoliators, physical and chemical.

Physical exfoliation is where you physically rub a product to remove dead skin. Chemical exfoliators work by using acids. The importance and benefits to an exfoliation step in your skin care routine is due to the removal of dead skin cells so you will have a new top layer of skin that’s all smooth and glowy.

Physical exfoliators

Beware of products that contain plastic beads or coffee grounds-yes these exfoliate the skin on your face, but it can cause MORE DAMAGE! These products are way too rough for the skin. Look for a physical exfoliant with sugar.  Sugar is a better choice because it’s dissolvable in water.  So if a scrub is too abrasive for you, adding more water will make it more gentle.  My favorite physical exfoliator is the Skinfood Black Sugar Scrub. There is just something so satisfying about physically scrubbing your face because you can feel all the grim leaving.

Chemical Exfoliators

The name might scare you, but DO NOT be afraid! The right kind of chemical exfoliator will be super gentle. These types of products work wonders on your skin! You can see the results almost immediately! I prefer chemical exfoliators just because it reduces the amount of physical damage done to your skin.

Neogen Dermatology is my go-to chemical exfoliant. I like the green tea one because it has calming properties which can be great for those with sensitive skin. I even tried this exfoliator when I had active and open pimples. It did NOT cause me any pain or leave a burning sensation. I recently tried the Neogen Dermatology Real Circa Pads. I was quite impressed with how it makes my skin feel and look the next day. This product is both a chemical exfoliator and toner, which is perfect for those who have sensitive skin. Both of these chemical exfoliators are great options for anyone who wants to benefit from super soft and even skin.

The Importance and Benefits of Toners

A good toner will prep your skin for the next steps and products. Beware of toners that have alcohol. It will dehydrate the skin, which will initially cause dry skin. Your face does not like being dry, so it will increase oil production. More oil = more breakouts! I’m pretty sure you’ll want to avoid alcohol toners now.

It is so important to hydrate after cleansing, especially after exfoliating. Your skin NEEDS it! A good toner will bring in the needed moisture and prep your skin to absorb the next skincare steps. Trust me and start incorporating a hydrating toner to your skin care routine ASAP! In the end, you will visibly see the importance of keeping your face hydrated and the benefits it can have on your skin, like extra plump and glowy skin!

Toners can also help get your facial skin’s pH back in order.  The normal pH of your skin is a little more acidic. After you wash your face, the pH may become slightly basic.  A basic pH , will cause acne and more breakouts! Probably not something you want to happen. Depending on the type of toner and its ingredients, they will target specific areas of concern.

My personal favorite toners focus on hydration.  I have super sensitive skin so I like using toners with very little fragrance.  A little extra hydration never hurt! Why wouldn’t you want extra plump looking skin?! With a good toner, your skin will look healthy and glowy. My favorites are the Klairs Supple Preparation Toner, the unscented version, Klairs Daily Skin Softening Water, and the Etude House Moistful Collagen Facial Toner.  The ones by Klairs are specifically for those with sensitive skin, but even if you don’t have that issue, these can still be really good options for you.

The etude house toner has collagen which focuses on anti-aging.  This can help prevent fine lines and wrinkles (if you don’t already have them) or help stop wrinkles from getting deeper. The importance of using a good toner in your skin care regimen is because you can see the benefits like glowy and well-hydrated skin almost immediately.

The Importance of the Right Treatment

Treatments are serums or creams, that target specific concerns that you have.  It is so important to figure out what you want to work on and look for products that have those ingredients.

If you have acne, spot treatments work wonders. Those with dry skin should try something that has hydrating properties like Niacinamide. If you want to focus on brightening and even complexion look for products with Vitamin C.  Learn more about Vitamin C serums HERE! Are wrinkles a concern?! Look for products with hydrating factors and collagen

You have to decide what you want to work on and find products with ingredients that will specifically target those concerns.  The importance of using the right kind of treatments is to ensure that your skin care routine is personalized, THEN you will see all the benefits those specific ingredients have to offer! The Benefits of Moisturizing Agents

No matter what your next skincare steps are, you need to follow it up with an eye cream and then moisturizer at all costs!  This is really important for people with oily and dry skin. I know this may seem counterintuitive, like why would you make your skin more “oily” with a moisturizer, when oil is a reason for breakouts. When oily skin gets too dry, it actually produces MORE oils! On the other hand, dry skin can be painful and lead to massive flaking. This is why moisturizing skin care products are so important!

A good moisturizer will give your skin the hydration it needs, which reduces the overproduction of oil.  I use 2 moisturizing products every night and my skin thanks me for it! As you start using quality moisturizing agents in your skin care routine, you will understand the importance and benefits of keeping your face well-hydrated. Leaving you with gorgeous plump looking skin.

Eye Cream

Everyone should use an eye cream as part of your daily skin care routine! You are never too young to start with anti-aging products!  The under-eye area is so delicate that this area will dry out faster.  It is also the first place you will see signs of aging.  Using an eye cream will save you from the pain of dry skin and will help increase skin elasticity.

A good eye cream will hydrate the under-eye area, reduce wrinkles, puffiness, or dark circles.  The secret here is to gently pat the cream into your skin with your ring finger.  This area is so delicate and sensitive that rubbing the product into the area may cause more damage than good.  I am still on the hunt for a really good under eye cream.  But the best ones I have tried so far are Mizon Collagen Power Firming Eye Cream and Etude House Collagen Eye Cream.

Moisturizers

First, I use an emulsion, which is basically a really thin moisturizer.  It has a lotion-like consistency. It’s not as heavy, so it is able to be absorbed faster. keeping your skin hydrated).  I followed it up with a moisturizer or deep cream. Moisturizers have a thicker consistency, which takes your skin longer to absorb it.  This might seem like a bad thing, but it’s actually really useful!  You now have a barrier between the air (which can dry out your skin) and the emulsion (which is hydrating your skin)!

I only use both the emulsion and moisturizer at night because I really want to lather it all on so I can have super plump skin in the morning. Using both of these products might make you look bit greasy, but when your sleeping no one cares! I love knowing that I am helping my skin stay hydrated! I only use an emulsion in the morning, because I didn’t want to look too oily when I’m at out and about.

My go to emulsions include this one by COSRX, and this one by Etude House. My favorite moisturizers have ingredients like snail mucin, honey, and Centella Asiatica (<- my all time favorite!)

With any of these steps, you really want to get products that are gentle and have ingredients that target your specific concerns.  Curating your own skincare routine includes a lot of trial and error.  You need to figure out what your skin enjoys and doesn’t. But beware of harmful ingredients in cosmetics and beauty products! These ingredients can negatively affect your skin. Make sure that you know how these ingredients can harm your skin!

In the end, you will create an amazing routine specifically for you and your skin. As you revamp your skin care routine, you will notice the importance of all these steps and how each step benefits your skin! Get ready to achieve your skincare goals!
